Aircon Service & Maintenance

The cheapest work we do, and the reason our clients rarely need the expensive kind.

A full aircon service from Airocool covers deep cleaning of the indoor evaporator coil, blower wheel and filters, chemical cleaning of the outdoor condenser coil, clearing and sanitising the condensate drain, checking refrigerant charge and system pressures, tightening and testing electrical connections, and measuring the temperature split to confirm actual performance. For systems in daily use in Durban’s climate we recommend servicing every six months; lightly used units can go twelve. Coastal properties should be on the six-month cycle regardless of use.

What servicing actually buys you

A neglected system costs money in three ways at once. A dirty coil and clogged filter force the unit to run longer for the same result, which shows up directly on your electricity bill. Restricted airflow makes the compressor run hot, which shortens its life — and the compressor is the part you cannot afford to lose. And a blocked drain will eventually put water through a ceiling. A service costs a fraction of any of those outcomes.

Air quality is not a marketing angle in this climate

Durban humidity turns a damp, dusty evaporator coil into an excellent growth medium. That is where the musty smell when the unit starts comes from, and it is being blown into the room you sleep in. Households with asthma or allergies notice the difference after a proper coil clean more than almost any other work we do. This is genuine deep cleaning — the blower wheel pulled and washed, the coil chemically treated — not a wipe of the front panel and a rinse of the filter.

What you can do between services

Wash the indoor filters in lukewarm water every four to six weeks and let them dry fully before refitting — in Durban, monthly during summer. Keep the outdoor unit clear of shrubs, and never stack anything against it. If you notice a musty smell, water marks near the indoor unit, ice on the pipework, or the unit running noticeably longer than it used to, book a service rather than waiting for it to fail.

What's included

Service & Maintenance

  • Deep clean of the indoor evaporator coil and blower wheel
  • Filter removal, wash and refit (or replacement where perished)
  • Chemical clean of the outdoor condenser coil
  • Condensate drain clearing, flushing and sanitising
  • Refrigerant pressure check and leak inspection
  • Electrical connections checked, tightened and current draw measured
  • Capacitor and contactor condition check
  • Temperature split measured and recorded against previous service
  • Written condition report with anything to watch

The process

How this job runs

  1. Book a slot

Single unit or a whole property. We give you a time window, and we keep it.

  2. Full service

Roughly 45–75 minutes per unit for a proper job. Anyone quoting fifteen minutes is rinsing a filter.

  3. Measure & record

Temperature split and pressures logged, so next service we can see what has changed.

  4. Report

A plain-language note on condition, plus anything worth budgeting for. No scare tactics.

Pricing

What affects the cost of a service

Servicing is the most predictable work we quote. The variables are:

Factors affecting the cost of service & maintenance
FactorWhy it matters
Number of unitsMultiple units at one property are meaningfully cheaper per unit than separate visits.
Unit typeA wall-mounted split is quicker than a ducted or cassette unit in a ceiling void.
Condition on arrivalA unit last serviced four years ago needs more chemical cleaning than one on a regular cycle.
AccessHigh-level and roof-mounted units take longer and sometimes need additional access equipment.
Contract vs once-offScheduled maintenance contracts are priced below once-off call-outs.

We publish the factors rather than a price list because a number that is wrong for your property is worse than no number at all. Ask us for a quote and you will get a real one.

Questions

Service & Maintenance — common questions

How often should an air conditioner be serviced in Durban?
Every six months for a unit in regular use, and every six months for any coastal property regardless of use, because salt air attacks the condenser continuously whether the unit is running or not. A lightly used guest-room unit inland can reasonably go twelve months. Commercial systems and anything in a dusty environment need more frequent attention.
What is included in an aircon service?
A proper service includes deep cleaning of the indoor coil and blower wheel, filter cleaning or replacement, chemical cleaning of the outdoor condenser, clearing and sanitising the condensate drain, checking refrigerant pressures for signs of a leak, testing and tightening electrical connections, measuring compressor current draw, and confirming the temperature split. If a quote does not mention the drain and the coils, it is a filter clean, not a service.
Does servicing my aircon reduce my electricity bill?
Yes, and it is usually the cheapest efficiency improvement available to you. A blocked filter and a fouled condenser coil force the system to run longer to achieve the same temperature. Restoring airflow and heat rejection to design condition brings the runtime back down. The saving is largest on units that have been neglected for several seasons.
Why does my aircon smell musty when it starts up?
Bacteria and mould growing on a damp evaporator coil and in the condensate tray — very common in Durban humidity. Air fresheners and spray cans only mask it. It clears properly with a chemical coil clean and drain sanitisation, and stays cleared if the unit is serviced on a sensible cycle.
Do I need to service a new air conditioner still under warranty?
Yes — and most manufacturer warranties require documented servicing to remain valid. Skipping services to save money is the fastest way to find your warranty declined on the one claim you actually needed. We provide a dated service record for exactly this reason.
