Air Conditioning Installation in Durban & the North Coast

Correctly sized, properly mounted, neatly piped. Installed once, done right.

Airocool installs residential and commercial air conditioning systems across Durban and the KZN North Coast. Every installation starts with a free on-site assessment where we calculate the actual cooling load for the room — floor area, ceiling height, glazing, orientation and occupancy — rather than guessing from a floor plan. We then size the unit to that load, position the indoor and outdoor units for airflow and serviceability, run and pressure-test the refrigerant pipework, vacuum the system before charging, and commission it with the client present.

Why correct sizing matters more than brand

An oversized unit is the single most common installation fault we are called out to fix. It cools the air fast, satisfies the thermostat, and switches off before it has removed any moisture — so the room ends up cold and clammy, the compressor short-cycles, and the unit wears out years early. An undersized unit runs flat out and never reaches setpoint. In Durban’s humidity, getting the sizing right is what separates a system that lasts fifteen years from one that becomes a recurring problem.

Coastal installations need coastal-grade hardware

If you are within a few kilometres of the sea — Umhlanga, Umdloti, Salt Rock, Ballito, Zimbali — salt-laden air attacks the aluminium fins and copper of the outdoor condenser. Untreated coils can corrode visibly within two or three seasons. We specify blue-fin or anti-corrosion coated condensers for coastal sites, mount units clear of direct spray and prevailing salt wind where the building allows, and use stainless or hot-dip galvanised brackets rather than the standard painted mild steel.

What a proper installation includes

Pipework is flared and torqued to spec, insulated over its full length, and pressure-tested with dry nitrogen before any refrigerant enters the system. The system is evacuated with a vacuum pump to remove moisture and non-condensables — skipping this is why some units fail inside two years. Condensate is drained to a legitimate outlet with correct fall, not left to drip down a wall. Electrical supply is checked and, where needed, a dedicated circuit and isolator are installed by our qualified electrician.

The process

How this job runs

  1. Site assessment

We visit, measure the space, check the electrical supply and discuss where the units can realistically go. No charge, no obligation.

  2. Written quote

A clear quote listing the unit, the capacity in kW or BTU, the installation scope and what is excluded. No vague line items.

  3. Installation

Usually a single day for a standard back-to-back split. Drop sheets down, cores drilled cleanly, mess taken away with us.

  4. Commission & handover

We run the system, confirm the temperature split, show you the controls and the filter-cleaning routine, and leave the paperwork.

Pricing

What affects the cost of an aircon installation

We quote per site rather than off a price list, because the installation is usually a bigger variable than the unit. These are the factors that move the number:

Factors affecting the cost of aircon installation
FactorWhy it matters
Capacity requiredA 9 000 BTU bedroom unit and a 24 000 BTU open-plan living area are very different machines.
Inverter vs non-inverterInverters cost more up front and materially less to run — usually the better call for anything used daily.
Pipe run lengthA back-to-back install through one wall is the cheapest case. Long runs through ceilings, roof voids or up multiple storeys add labour and material.
Mounting and accessGround-floor brick is straightforward. Double-storey, face brick, tiled roofs or scaffold access are not.
Electrical workSome homes need a dedicated circuit or a DB upgrade before a unit can be added safely.
Coastal specificationCoated coils and stainless brackets add cost up front and save a condenser replacement later.

We publish the factors rather than a price list because a number that is wrong for your property is worse than no number at all. Ask us for a quote and you will get a real one.

Questions

Aircon Installation — common questions

How long does an air conditioner installation take?
A standard back-to-back split unit is typically installed in four to six hours, so a single day on site. Longer pipe runs, multi-storey access, multi-split systems or installs that need electrical work beforehand can run into a second day. We tell you which case you are before we start, not on the day.
What size air conditioner do I need for my room?
As a rough starting point in Durban’s climate, allow roughly 9 000 BTU for a small bedroom up to about 15 m², 12 000 BTU for a large bedroom or small lounge to about 20 m², 18 000 BTU up to about 32 m², and 24 000 BTU for an open-plan living area up to about 45 m². Treat those as indicative only — west-facing glass, high ceilings, a poorly insulated roof or a room full of people can push the requirement up a whole size. We calculate the actual load on site before quoting.
Can you install an air conditioner I bought myself?
Yes. We install client-supplied units regularly. We will inspect it before we start and tell you honestly if it is the wrong capacity for the space or missing required components. The unit warranty stays with your supplier; our workmanship warranty covers the installation.
Do I need permission to install an aircon in a complex or estate?
Usually yes. Most estates and sectional-title schemes on the North Coast — Mount Edgecombe, Zimbali, Umhlanga Ridge and similar — have rules about where outdoor units may be mounted, how visible they may be, and what noise levels are acceptable. We can supply the technical details your trustees or HOA need, and we plan the installation around whatever they approve.
Is an inverter air conditioner worth the extra cost?
For anything you run daily — a bedroom, a home office, a living area — yes. An inverter varies compressor speed instead of switching hard on and off, which typically cuts running cost meaningfully, holds temperature more evenly and is noticeably quieter. For a guest room used a few nights a year, a fixed-speed unit is easier to justify.
