Air Conditioning Repairs & Fault Diagnostics

We find the actual fault instead of replacing parts until something works.

Airocool repairs air conditioning systems across Durban and the KZN North Coast, working from diagnosis rather than replacement. A call-out begins with measurement — supply and return air temperatures, operating pressures, superheat and subcooling, compressor current draw and control-circuit voltages — so we can identify the actual root cause. We then quote the repair before doing it, and we will tell you plainly when a unit is genuinely not worth repairing rather than selling you work that will not last.

A gas top-up is not a repair

Refrigerant is not consumed. A sealed system does not use gas up the way a car uses petrol. If your unit is low on refrigerant, there is a leak, and simply recharging it means you will be making the same call in another season — and paying again. We pressure-test and leak-trace first. Sometimes the leak is a loose flare that takes minutes to correct; sometimes it is a corroded coil that changes the economics entirely. Either way you get told which.

The faults we see most in this region

Blocked condensate drains causing water to run down interior walls — extremely common in Durban humidity. Corroded outdoor coils on coastal properties. Compressor and PCB damage from load-shedding surges and unstable supply. Seized fan motors and worn bearings. Failed capacitors, which are cheap and quick and are frequently misdiagnosed as a dead compressor. Dirty filters and coils, which are not a fault at all but cause perhaps a third of the "not cooling properly" calls we attend.

When we tell you not to repair

If a unit is over about twelve years old, running an obsolete refrigerant, and facing a compressor replacement, the repair often costs more than half a new inverter system that will use materially less electricity. We will say so. Our reputation in Durban North and on the North Coast is built on clients who were told the truth about an old unit, not on invoices for work that bought six more months.

The process

How this job runs

  1. Describe the symptom

Call or WhatsApp us. What it does, when it started, any noises or smells. It helps us arrive with the right parts.

  2. On-site diagnosis

We measure rather than guess. Most faults are identified within the first visit.

  3. Quote before work

You get the cause, the fix and the cost before we proceed. If it is not worth fixing, we say so.

  4. Repair & verify

We complete the repair, then re-measure to confirm the system is genuinely performing, not just running.

What affects the cost of an aircon repair

Repairs are quoted after diagnosis, because quoting before you know the fault is guessing. What drives the figure:

Factors affecting the cost of aircon repairs
FactorWhy it matters
The failed componentA capacitor is a small part. A compressor is the most expensive component in the system.
Whether refrigerant is lostA leak repair plus full recharge costs more than a straightforward electrical fault.
Refrigerant typeR410A and R32 systems differ in gas cost and in the equipment needed to handle them.
AccessCeiling-void ducted units and high-level roof-mounted condensers take longer to reach and work on.
Parts availabilityCurrent models are quick. Discontinued units may need an equivalent part sourced.

We publish the factors rather than a price list because a number that is wrong for your property is worse than no number at all. Ask us for a quote and you will get a real one.

Questions

Aircon Repairs — common questions

Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling?
The four most common causes, in the order we find them: a filthy filter or indoor coil restricting airflow; low refrigerant from a leak; a failed capacitor stopping the compressor from starting while the fan keeps running; or a blocked outdoor condenser coil that cannot reject heat. The first is something you can check yourself in two minutes. The rest need measurement.
Why is my aircon leaking water inside the house?
Almost always a blocked condensate drain. The indoor unit pulls a great deal of moisture out of Durban air, and that water leaves through a small drain line that clogs with dust, algae and biofilm. When it blocks, the tray overflows into the room. It is a routine, inexpensive fix — but left alone it damages ceilings, walls and cabinetry, so it is worth attending to quickly.
My aircon trips the DB board — what is wrong?
Common causes are a failing compressor drawing excessive start current, a shorted fan motor, water ingress into the outdoor unit, a damaged supply cable, or an undersized or shared circuit that was never adequate. Do not keep resetting it — repeated tripping under fault conditions can turn a repairable problem into a replacement. Switch the unit off at the isolator and call us.
How much does an aircon repair cost in Durban?
It depends entirely on what has failed, and any company quoting a repair price before diagnosing the fault is guessing. We charge a call-out and diagnostic fee, then quote the repair before we do it. Ask us for the current call-out figure when you book — we will tell you upfront and it is credited against the repair if you go ahead.
Is it better to repair or replace an old air conditioner?
Our rule of thumb: if the unit is under eight years old, repair it. If it is over twelve, running an old refrigerant, and needs a compressor or coil, replacement usually wins on total cost within two to three years once you account for the electricity an old fixed-speed unit consumes. Between eight and twelve years it is a judgement call, and we will give you ours honestly.
